Setting worthy goals as a church

Last week, Colin encouraged us to set worthy goals from the passage of Philippians 1 which includes our personal goals – developing humility, growing in spiritual maturity, striving for holiness. Today we will look at some of the corporate goals that we need to set as the body of Christ.

Why do we need to set corporate goals?

When the New Testament refers to church, in 80% of the cases it is talking about a local church. We have this idea that the “church” is this abstract amalgamation of all believers from all times, but when Paul or Peter or Luke talk about the church, they are referring to the church in Ephesus, the church in Philippi, the church that meets in someone’s house… it is not either or, but it is focused on the local with a vision of the global and eternal. We are born on our own, but we are born into a family just as in the natural. This family that we are born into is the church. The church is not an organisation, it’s a spiritual body – it is the fellowship of the redeemed. Romans 12:5 “so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”

We need the local church in order to obey Jesus. Both the great commandment (Matthew 22:37-39 “7 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”) and the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”) are rooted in a place. In fact, the promise is that when the holy spirit comes upon us, we will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

You and I are here by design to meet the purposes of God in this place and time. So as we step into this new year, let’s look at what is the role of the this church in this place and how do we set ourselves up to obey God.

Q. What are some of the new year’s resolutions you’ve ever set that have actually stuck? When you reflect on it, what is the difference between the resolutions that stick v. the ones that don’t? Illustrations of gym or eating healthy, etc.

  • Commitment

  • Custom

  • Compelling vision

1. Commitment.

Q. What is Jesus committed to?

Matt 16:18 “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Q. What do we need to be committed to?

Acts 2: 42- 45 – “And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers...And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

So there were some things that the believers were committed to (devoted to) – to the apostles teaching, to fellowship, to prayer, to giving- and they did all this in the context of a community.

a. Apostle’s teaching – not just doing our bible reading in our personal devotion, but corporately. Do we come expecting God to speak to us through the word each Sunday, or do we go searching online for whoever the latest or most favourite preachers?

b. fellowship – not just friendship but an intentional togetherness. Illustration – fellowship of the rings. It is coming together for a purpose - for mutual edification. Ephesians 4: 15-16 “speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and help together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work”

c. prayer – most underused gift of the church is corporate prayer.

d. giving – tithes and offerings belong in the local church first. Giving is beyond this – it is giving of your time, resources, meeting the needs in the church. Many times, the needs are not monetary. Are we a generous community?

2. Custom – our commitments need to turn into custom

just saying we are committed to something is not enough. the road to hell is paved with good intentions

Jesus and the disciples had certain customs:

Luke 4: 16 “And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.

Luke 22:39 “And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him” (prayer)

Acts 17: 1-2 “Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

Acts 2: 46-47 “ 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people

Q. What are some of our customs?

Is attending church on a Sunday a custom, it is something that is non-negotiable? Is prayer a custom? Lets look at how to turn our commitments into customs.

A commitment requires good intention, but a custom requires good planning. Illustrations - how can we make it to church on time/ be there for corporate prayer.

3. Compelling vision:

Q. What is Jesus’ vision for the church?

Ephesians 5: 25-27 “25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish

Revelation 21: 2-4 “ And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place[a] of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people,[b] and God himself will be with them as their God.[c] He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Q. What is our vision?

Colin will tell us next week.

But it has to do with being salt and light in this place. it has to do with loving God and loving our neighbours, it has to do with make disciples of the nations starting with NIBM, Undri, Pune and to the ends of the earth. In all this, we are the hands and feet of Christ. when God thinks about the darkness and evil that is prevalent in this area, his answer is, let me send word of grace church there.

The One goes after the one

This message was preached at Word Of Grace Church on December 1st 2024 by Colin. For the audio & video please click here.  For the worship please click here.

What is God's purpose for us in this place?

Luke 15 - lost sheep, lost coin and lost son.

“Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."” - Luke‬ ‭15‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Every society has a social order. In Jesus' time, at the very bottom of the barrel, were lepers, then there were shepherds, tax collectors, prostitutes and sinners were next. The Pharisees and scribes set themselves apart from them.  They looked down on Jesus because he related to them and ate with them.

Even in today’s society, these distinctions still exist. Jesus addresses this situation in this passage.

“"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” - Luke‬ ‭15‬:‭4‬-‭7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“"Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.' Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."” - Luke‬ ‭15‬:‭8‬-‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Luke 15 is about 3 parables that Jesus teaches. They all have the same theme - something lost, something found, great rejoicing. He repeats it in 3 parables to hammer in the point.

The parable is the use of an illustration using everyday life. He is taking a story to communicate a deeper moral truth and a spiritual lesson.

Jesus was showing how important and precious lost people are. These parables are similar but not identical.

Sheep are not the sharpest animals. They are always afraid of predators. 3 types of sinners are lost.

  1. The lost sheep: They are lost, know they’re lost and can’t help themselves. They need a good shepherd. God is interested in lost people. There are 100s of people in this mall who are lost without Jesus. What is it that gives the Father in heaven great joy? A sinner repenting. the angels rejoice with him! People go from crisis to calm. Lost sheep are those who are lost and just a friend to come along and give them hope. Jesus can come into their lives and change them. That’s why we pursue them.

  1. The lost coin: this is the kind of person who is lost and doesn’t know that he is lost. Our job is to seek people like this and bring the light of Jesus into their life. When the coin is found, again there is rejoicing.

  1. The lost son: “And he said, "There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.' And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. "But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants."' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to celebrate.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭15‬:‭11‬-‭24‬ ‭ESV‬‬.

This guy came to his senses. The lost sheep couldn’t help himself. The lost coin didn’t know that he was lost. But the prodigal son takes steps to come back to the father. There are people in our lives who have made bad decisions and find themselves with the pigs. You cannot stop them from leaving. The shepherd went looking for the coin and the woman went looking for the coin. But the father didn’t go looking, he stayed waiting. We need to be like the father, looking out for them to take steps to return.

God's heart : God rejoices over sinners repenting. Sadly the Pharisees and scribes who had the word of God did not rejoice in the sinners repenting. Do we have the heart of the father or the heart of the Pharisees? Do we seek out the lost or stay away from them to keep ourselves clean?

Let’s examine our hearts. Do you identify with any one of these lost people? Your response is to come to Jesus. For the rest of us, our job is to take the love of God to the lost ones.

Faithful to Scripture

This message was preached at Word Of Grace Church on October 20th 2024 by Colin. For the audio & video please click here.  For the worship please click here.

FAITHFUL TO SCRIPTURE

All of us have a certain understanding of for world is and based on that we live our lives.

Romans 12:1-2 - [1] Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. [2] Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

There's a command in these verses. Don't act or believe what the world says. But be renewed and transformed.

The world is trying to change is to fit its mould. There are different types of philosophies, and we have the freedom to accept anything. Every time we watch a movie or series, we are affected by them. What God says is that do not be conformed to the pattern of this world.

The different patterns in the world that we see are - big fat Indian wedding, grand celebration of 1st birthday, reading horoscope, wearing different symbols, signs and rings for luck and protection.

All these are from culture and philosophies, and they try to fit us into their moulds.

So not think as the world does but be transformed according to the Word. We must ask ourselves - is this how God wants me to be or do? We must know the scriptures, study the scriptures and change our way of thinking and doing things.

Four attributes of scripture:

1. Authority of the scripture

The truth is in the Bible. It helps us understand what the truth is. In this world, there is no central truth on which all the people can believe. But Bible has the truth. Bible is the final authority. That is what divides us from rest of the world. The scriptures are words of God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - [16] All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, [17] so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

All the scripture is God-breathed. These are not thoughts of man but thoughts of God.

2 Peter 1:20 - [20] Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.

The Holy Spirit worked in the life of Peter and used his character to pen down these words.

2. Clarity of the scripture

Word of God is so simple that a child can understand but also difficult to understand. The great theologians still are confused about certain things in the Bible.

Mark Twain said, "It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand."

We need Holy Spirit to understand the scripture, for revelation and for illumination. As we approach Bible in humility, not just to understand but to obey and ask the Holy Spirit, He will help us understand the scripture.

3. Necessity of the scripture

To live in this life, we need to know the scriptures. To live right in any kind of relationship, we need the scripture. The Bible tells us how to have relationships like parents, children, spouse, marriage and many more.

So, we need the scripture to have healthy relationships.

4. Sufficiency of the scripture

2 Peter 1:3 - His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

2 Timothy 2:15 - [15] Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

Without scripture, we will not know God completely. There are hundreds of varieties of insects and many other living things. God created all of them. By looking at them we will not be able understand God. We need the voice of God to help us understand Him. The end result is that we are transformed by renewing of our minds as we read the scripture.

We read scripture to understand and renew our minds. All of us are familiar with the SPECK model of Bible studying.

As many of you are going on holidays, I encourage you to spend time by reading scripture and doing SPECK (Sin to avoid, Promise to claim, Example to follow, Command to obey, Knowledge to rejoice in)

Do this faithfully and see how it transforms your thinking and also your lives.

Partnering with God's Vision

This message was preached at Word Of Grace Church on October 6th 2024 by Colin. For the audio & video please click here.  For the worship please click here.

Partnering with God's Vision

We will be moving shortly.

When David instructed Solomon to build a house of the Lord, David had it in his heart to do it himself but God prevented that from happening. The temple that was build was the dwelling place of God. Today God is in us. Wherever the church of God is present, he is there. “you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” - 1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭5‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This hall is not holy by itself, but God is here because we are worshipping him here. We are moving to a dying mall, and as we move in, we will be a blessing to that place. We need to prepare our hearts for this move.

“David assembled at Jerusalem all the officials of Israel, the officials of the tribes, the officers of the divisions that served the king, the commanders of thousands, the commanders of hundreds, the stewards of all the property and livestock of the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the mighty men and all the seasoned warriors. Then King David rose to his feet and said: "Hear me, my brothers and my people. I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord and for the footstool of our God, and I made preparations for building. But God said to me, 'You may not build a house for my name, for you are a man of war and have shed blood.'” - 1 Chronicles‬ ‭28‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

David had mighty victories and immense wealth. But in all this, he had a heart to build a house for the Lord. Where is your heart today? Is it wrapped up in just your home, job, family, and the cares of this world, or are you committed to building the house of God?

While David had the heart posture to build God's house, but God wouldn’t allow him to do that because his hands were unclean.

“"And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever. Be careful now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be strong and do it."” - 1 Chronicles‬ ‭28‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

  1. Acknowledge God

  2. Serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind

“Then David gave Solomon his son the plan of the vestibule of the temple, and of its houses, its treasuries, its upper rooms, and its inner chambers, and of the room for the mercy seat; and the plan of all that he had in mind for the courts of the house of the Lord, all the surrounding chambers, the treasuries of the house of God, and the treasuries for dedicated gifts; for the divisions of the priests and of the Levites, and all the work of the service in the house of the Lord; for all the vessels for the service in the house of the Lord,” - ‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭28‬:‭11‬-‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God, through David, directed him about all the details of the house. We want the same as we make this move. We need God's direction in all the small and big matters. Pray that the Holy Spirit guides us in this.

“Then David said to Solomon his son, "Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.” - 1 Chronicles‬ ‭28‬:‭20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The promise of God is to be with us so that we can be strong and courageous. He is our provider. We will need different departments or teams to make this happen. Each one of us has a part to play in this. Let’s work on this together.

David passes on this to his son Solomon, in chapter 29 we will look at 7 things in giving

Ch 29:1 The task is great - it’s a palatial structure for god to dwell in. We are building something for God's glory

2. Ch 29:2 David provides for the temple in large quantities!

The vision David had was to give for something glorious even though he would never see it. He recognised that the temple was for God and he wanted to give… and he gave in faith.

V6 the officials and leaders also pooled in to give generously. No one had to be arm-twisted to give. The people gave willingly freely and wholeheartedly to the lord. There was great joy as they gave. V9

4. As we give you will be full of joy

5. Ch 29 V 11 David’s prayer - he acknowledges that everything we have comes from the lord. We are just giving back what belongs to the lord. There is a great privilege in giving

7. 29v19 - praise God and bowed low to worship god.

2 Ch 5:14 and the temple of the lord was filled with the presence of God.
