THE CHURCH - A FAMILY

INTRODUCTION

The Bible records many pictures of the church. We are called the army of God, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, the temple of God, the new Jerusalem, the body of Christ, etc. Which one do you identify with the most?

Today, let us look at the church as the family of God.

From the beginning, we see family on display in the trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are perfect in unity, love, and cooperation. As Christ's followers, we aim to become more Christlike in who we are and what we do.

GOD AND MAN

Creation -God always wanted to have a relationship with us. He created the most magnificent creatures and placed them on the Earth. Then, He made man by His breath and hands to enjoy a loving, intimate relationship with Him.

He did not just create us but gave us power, authority and dominion – to govern the earth as he would because Adam and Eve were His Image bearers.

Corruption -Then sin came in and ruined everything. First is fractured our relationship with God. Adam and Eve were banished from the garden. They lost their power, authority, and dominion and, most of all, lost their relationship with God. Where God was once their Father, they are now orphaned. This orphan heart is passed down to all of humanity through Adam. The orphan heart is distrustful, hateful, competitive, selfish, willful, disobedient and everything else evil you can imagine. Darkness, evil, chaos and destruction become the order of the day.

Yet God does not give up on us. He still wants to carve out special people, a family that will display His glory on earth, as part of His redemption plan. He calls out Abraham and makes a covenant with him, saying that he will become a great nation, and all the nations will be blessed through him.

Fast-forward, and we see God make the nation of Israel a special people to display His glory. But the rebellion was so deep-seated in man's heart that they kept breaking that covenant with God.

But God always had an eternal plan. In the fullness of time, while we were rambling in our rebellion and sin, God sent His Son on earth to show sinful Adam’s descendants how true humanity ought to live. He lived a perfect life, and God placed Jesus in a family. He demonstrated what an obedient son looks like.

The Cross - Jesus fulfilled His mission on the Cross: to reconcile humanity to the Father. The flaming sword that puts a divide between us having eternal life is now replaced by sacrifice on a cross that breaks the barrier and tears the veil separating us. His blood made a way for us to approach the throne of grace boldly and by which we can now call Him Abba Father.

We who were once alienated from God and brought back to him are now Children of God as we put our trust in Him. We have been adopted into His family. What does that mean?

New Creations -We now have His Divine Nature Activated in us. We are new creations in Christ.

Our nature, identity, and purpose are restored to us. We go from orphans to sonship, abandonment to belonging, aimlessness to purpose, insecurity to security and perfect love in Christ.

All this takes a lifetime to work out as we submit ourselves to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. This process is called restoration or sanctification. We are being changed from one degree of glory to another. The more we obey, the more we change.

WHO WE ARE AS CHILDREN OF GOD IN HIS HOUSEHOLD.

What does scripture say about us as a family of God?

FAMILY FEATURES

·      Every family has a culture. Culture means a set of beliefs and behaviours that everyone has and does that are unique to that culture.

The culture of the family of God is simply Kingdom culture. Do you want to know what that is? Read Matt 5 to 7, the Sermon on the Mount.

·    We are multi-generational 2Tim 3:16

·    We all serve – We are not a restaurant where you look to be served, you can criticise the service, and your focus is on what you get to consume.

In a family, we all serve each other, are sacrificial, give, and look after one another.

GOD IS OUR FATHER 

Matt 6: 9, “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Rom 8:15-16 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” ¹⁶ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

2 Cor 6:18 And, “I will be a Father to you, And you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

 

1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

CHRIST AS THE HEAD OF THE FAMILY

• Ephesians 5:23 – “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.”
• Colossians 1:18 – “And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, and in everything, he might be preeminent.”

WE ARE JESUS BROTHER’S And SISTERS

• Matthew 12:49-50 – “And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’”
• Hebrews 2:11 – “For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers.”
• 1 Peter 3:8 – “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.”
• Romans 12:10 – “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honour.”

HOUSEHOLD

Eph 2: 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household,

1 Tim 3:15 If I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.

Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Heb 3:6 But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

UNITY AND FELLOWSHIP IN THE FAMILY OF GOD

• Acts 2:42-47 – “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
• Colossians 3:13-14 – “Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”
• Ephesians 4:3-6 – “Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
• Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

LOVE AND CARE WITHIN THE CHURCH FAMILY

• John 13:34-35 – “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have a love for one another.”
• Galatians 6:2 – “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
• 1 Thessalonians 5:11 – “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
• 1 Timothy 5:1-2 – “Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.”

There are 4 types of people in a family:

·        Infants, those who serve, the old, and those who hang around and do nothing. Which one are you?

This is who we are. Much more can be said, but this is enough to chew on and think about.

Next week, we will examine what a family does. Today, we just examined who we are.

CONCLUSION

Where are you in the family? An infant, one who serves, one who is old or the one that hangs around and does nothing.

Do you have a buy-in to this local household of God? Is it evident to the others that you belong, not that you just attend? If you do not attend the family gathering, will you be missed?

If you do not serve and contribute to this local household, think about what you need to change to make that shift.

Eph 4:11-15 - So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, ¹² to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up ¹³ until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

¹⁴ Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. ¹⁵ Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

This is the final goal for all of us – to attain maturity and reproduce.

Focus 2024 - Part 1 - Who are you living for?

Who are you living for?

When we meet someone after introducing ourselves, what is the first question we ask them?

It is, “What do you do?”. Instead try asking them, “What are you living for? Ask the same question to yourself, what am I living for?

Some live for money, some live to retire and have a relaxed life and some live for fame want their name to be up in the lights. Today, it is not about lights, but it is about likes and followers.

Some live for approval, some for comfort, some for travel and holidays and some for food. What am I living for? We may say, I’m living for Jesus and maybe you are.

In the movie, “The Pirates of the Caribbean”, Jack Sparrow has a compass which points to Black Pearl. What is our compass pointing to? Sometimes, our compass can get demagnetized. If that is true, this new year, we must get our compass re-magnetized. We must truly live for Jesus.

Recently when we were clearing stuff at our home, we found a pile of journals. I encourage you to maintain a journal, take down notes and write down what God speaks to you.

This morning, let us see how we can re-magnetize so that we point to Jesus. Today, we are alive not because of different kinds of diet and exercise, but because it is Jesus who kept us alive. Let us look at,

Matthew 16:13-28 to find out the true purpose of our lives.

Matthew 16:13-14 - 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

Even though the disciples saw Jesus doing amazing things, they still had a faulty understanding.

Caesarea is a place which is centre for Roman and Greek idolatry. A huge temple was built for Emperor Augustus. Amid idolatry and false Gods, Jesus asked this question. Who do people say I am?

People said that Jesus was John, the Baptist, Elijah, and Jeremiah.

Matthew 16:15-16 - 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

When Jesus asked the disciples who they thought Jesus was, Simon Peter answered, “Christ, the Son of the Living God”. Some people think Christ is the surname. Christ means Messiah or The Anointed One.

John 5:17-18 - 17 In his defence Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Several times, Jesus claimed equality with God. Jesus, Son of the Living God, is the greatest confession of the Church. To align our compass, this is the first thing. Jesus is the Messiah, Savior, the Anointed One.

John 20:28 - 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

John 6:68 - 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 

We are a bunch of people who come together not to hear a motivational talk, but to declare, confess and agree that Jesus is the Son of God.

1 Tim 3:15 - 15 If I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. 

God’s household is the Church. In the world today, there is confusion about God. Even the most intelligent people may not understand the spiritual truth. A high IQ does not necessarily translate to a high SQ (Spiritual Quotient).

1 Tim 3:16 - 16 Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit,[d] was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.

Appeared in the flesh – born in the human body, vindicated by the Spirit – filled with Spirit, seen by angels at the time of resurrection.

Gospel needs to be proclaimed to every people group. Only then the end will come.

How did Simon come to know who Jesus was?

Matthew 16:17 - 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood but by my Father in heaven.

The truth was revealed to Simon by the Father in Heaven. The great confession comes with revelation but not with the human eye. The supernatural revelation comes as we read God’s word. Scriptures are essential.

Luke 24:27 -  27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus explained many things about himself from the scriptures.

John Calvin says, “If the Church doesn’t have sound doctrine, exposition of scripture, Church discipline, baptisms, Lord’s table, then it is not a Church.

Matt 16:18 -  18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 

God has to touch a person’s heart so that they see who Jesus is. We are in darkness till Jesus opens our eyes. Many people get confused with the above verse. They think the Church will be built on Peter. The truth is the name Peter comes from Petrus, which means Stone. But the verse talks about a Rock. The rock is very huge.

Matt 7:24 - 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

A house can be built on a very huge rock. So, Jesus said that he would build his church on the truth that Jesus is the son of God. One of the principles of studying God's word is to interpret the scripture, by comparing it to another scripture.

What are we living for?

This is seen in the next few verses.

Matt 16:24 - 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.

I encourage you to read this verse and meditate upon it in the coming week.

Let us establish this –

1.      Jesus says, I will build my Church.

2.      The Church is built on the revelation of who Jesus is – The Son of the Living God.

3.      We can only get this revelation by supernatural touch from God himself.

Elements of Church being a Family

The church as a family

1. Loving 

John 13:34-35 - A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Rom 12:10 - Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one another above  yourselves.

2 Corinthians 13:12 - Greet one another with a holy kiss.

Rom 16:16 - Greet one another with a holy kiss

1 Thessalonians 5:26 - Greet all God's people with a holy kiss

1 Cor 16:20b - Greet one another with a holy kiss

Dream with me

What would a loving church look like?

As you walk in people warmly greet one another and catch up with you. If it is your birthday or wedding anniversary you get wished appropriately. 

Some want friends to come in at midnight, and others would love a cake.

When you are unwell, you get calls, maybe a visit or a meal.

What do you do when you want these things to happen to you? 

The solution is in Matt 7:12 - So in everything do to others what you would have them do to you for this sums up the Law and the Prophets

2. Forgiving

Col 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Eph 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Matt 18:21-22 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?

Jesus answered, I tell you not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

We must forgive completely, unconditionally, repetitively, continually how Christ forgave us

Forgiveness and trust are different issues. Trust is earned and forgiveness is always given.

3. Accepting

Associate and relate with people different from us.

Rom 15:7 Accept one another, then just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

1 Cor 12:22-25 - 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 

The poor, the slaves, the disabled, and those with mental illnesses or learning disabilities. Though despised in the world they should be given greater honour in the church.

Special emphasis must be on the poor and the different.

4. Disciplining/maintaining healthy boundaries

Rev 3:19 -  Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 

Heb 12:8 - If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 

Heb 12:11 - No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Gal 6:1 - Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently.

Matt 18:15-17 - 

v15 If your brother sins (against you), go and show him his fault just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.

v16 But if he will not listen, takes one or two others along, so that ever My matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

v17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

Titus 3:10-11 - Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.

v11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

1 Cor 5:4 - When your are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan, so that the flesh may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord

1 Tim 1:20 - Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

Job 2:6 - The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.” - to put the professed believer out of our fellowship, to excommunicate him,

Satan is the ruler of this world, and turning a believer over to Satan, therefore thrusts the believer back into the world on his own, apart from the care and support of Christian fellowship. The word "handed over" is a strong term indicating the judicial act of sentencing, of handing over for punishment.

1 Cor v9-13 - But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

Expel the wicked man from among you.

In Rev 2:14 Pergamum tolerated sexual immorality

Eph 5:25-27 - 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

We are Jesus' bride being made holy and spotless.

Get Committed Part 1

GET COMMITTED

Session 1

 

The purpose of the Get Committed series is to commit to Vision, Values and Mission as a community of believers and to use your giftings for the advancement of God’s Kingdom.

On the first day of your job, you get to attend the orientation programme. If you don’t have that orientation programme, you get lost.  The Get Committed is like an orientation. What is Word of Grace? What are its Values, Vision and Mission?

Did you know that airline pilots go through a test which needs to be taken up every now and then to get recertified?

How many are in the habit of hiking? We don’t do it every day. We plan the hiking well in advance and then go for it. Every day around my house, I see people running. They are the army people who don’t have a choice but to run daily.

Are you a part of the church as a hobby?

We have renamed Get Connected to Get Committed as most of you are already connected to the Church. When you join the army, you get a lot of benefits. Some of them are canteen, medical, concession and many more. If you are an army officer, you get people to serve you. Does anyone join the army for benefits alone? If that is so, will you even be considered? No! We get prepared to work and undergo training.

As Christians, sometimes, we can only attend church meetings for our benefit. There’s a calling for each one of us. But some Christians are content with only enjoying the benefits and not committing to anything.

What does God expect of me?

Today, we would be looking at some of our values.

When Andrew and Jessica were kids, we used to go to a DVD shop, spend around half an hour selecting movies, rent a video, come home, and watch together. Families have values and cultures. Each family has its own culture. What are the things you all observed in the Word of Grace church?

Worship, Hospitality, Serving, Not being judgemental, Sunday School etc.

Word of Grace is -

1.      Faithful to scripture

2.      A Gospel preaching church

3.      Full of grace

  

1.      Faithful to scripture

In the world, there are many thoughts about what is right and what is wrong. Any form you fill, it has the gender – Male, Female, Transgender etc.

Our standard of living is the Word of God.

 2 Tim 3:16 - ¹⁶ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

 Whenever we want to make a decision, we ask, “What does the Bible say?” Following this, you can never go wrong. Get hold of a Bible and read it.

 Acts 17:11 - ¹¹ Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

 Even though it was Paul who was teaching the Bereans, they not just received the message preached by Paul but examined the scriptures to see if what Paul taught was true. We must open the Bible and go through the scriptures and examine them during the sermon.

 

2.      A Gospel preaching church

Acts 13:47 - For this is what the Lord has commanded us: “‘I have made you^[a] a light for the Gentiles, that you^[b] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’^[c]”

God saved us so that we could be light to the world, proclaiming the gospel to the ends of the Earth. We are saved because someone left their nation, came here and preached.

How do we do this in Word of Grace? We proclaim the gospel through Friendship Sunday, Christmas Carols Sunday etc. God also wants us to individually share the gospel. We want to do it personally and also as a church. There are different ways to do it.

·         Going somewhere - God may tell us to go somewhere and proclaim His Word. God told Navaz and me to move to Pune from Mumbai.

·         Giving – we as a church gave towards many causes. As the church gives offerings, it is being used for the extension of God’s Kingdom

·         Praying – As we pray for the unreached, different groups and churches will advance

Imagine you have a lovely car. It has excellent leather seats, a dashboard, a screen that displays music and a rear view while reversing and many more features. With all these amazing features, if the car is unable to move, then it’s useless.

The primary focus of the church is to proclaim the gospel. Even in the midst of persecution, the gospel always advances. As a believer, you are called to proclaim the gospel. It may not be to a large group, but even if it is to 2 or 3 people, we must always look forward to proclaiming the gospel

3.      Grace

When you walk into Word of Grace Church, you breathe in grace. It is the foundation for our church. Even unbelievers use the word ‘Grace’ but they don’t know what true grace is.

Ephesians 2:8-9 - ⁸ For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— ⁹ not by works, so that no one can boast.

Salvation is a gift. If you are a believer, that’s because God chose you by His grace and saved you. Most people stop there. It doesn’t end there. Grace is more than that.

Ephesians 2: 10 - ¹⁰ For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Daily, our question should be, “What do you want me to do today God?”

·         Grace is not saying, “I’m saved and I don’t have to do anything.” We are saved by grace to do good works. God is going to reward us for all the good works we do.

·         Grace teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness. We receive grace and forgiveness when we sin. The other side of this is saying ‘No’ to sin.

·         Grace is being able to forgive oneanother. Sometimes we take offence. By the grace of God, we don’t go around judging people. But we forgive one another. We must also speak the truth in love. God loves you just the way you are. He loves you too much to leave you as you are.

   

Word of Grace is an Evangelical (Born Again),  Spirit-filled (Charismatic), Reformed, English-speaking church in Pune that upholds the Bible as God's inspired Word for life. We are a church community that has people from every part of India and parts of the world.
