Get Committed Part 5

This message was preached at Word Of Grace Church on January 29th 2023  by Colin D'Cruz. For the audio & video please click here. To listen to the worship please click here.

GET COMMITTED - PART 5

Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."” - Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭18‬-‭20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

You and I, if we are believers, we live under the highest orders by the highest authority to go and make disciples. We also spoke about the different stages of growth as a believer- seeker, infant, child, young adult and parents (mothers and fathers)

An infant's life is characterized by ignorance. As a child, however, there is some growth and began to read their bible.  They are only concerned with themselves, their comfort and well being. They are not committed to serving even though they might do some things. Young adults have grown spiritually and have moved from being self-centred to others centred. They have grown in maturity and progress. They are committed to serving. Fathers and Mothers not just care for people but give birth to people through the gospel. These are the four discipleship stages. It will be good to assess where you are and see how you can grow. Children will always think they’re adults, so you need others also to speak into your life and progress in the area of growth. The focus should be on growing.

There are milestones in our journey. We looked at 3 milestones:

  1. Personal worship

  2. Public worship

  3. Heart worship

You will find more on these in part 2 of the series.

  1. Being part of a small group: when you are a part of a church, you are not a part of an organisation, you’re a part of an organism. During the week we meet in small groups where we get to know people at a more deeper level - to care and share, to challenge and support, to confide and confess, to rejoice and weep, and to be accountable to each other. Personal growth does not happen in isolation, it happens in the community. Where do we find small groups in the Bible? “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,” ‭‭- Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭46‬ ‭ESV‬‬. At Word of Grace we have a few gyms ( house groups). We are starting an online gym for people who are unable to make it to any of the gyms. Over the years our small groups have cared for one another very well.

  1. Loving one another: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another."”‭‭ - John‬ ‭13‬:‭34‬-‭35‬ ‭ESV‬‬. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” - ‭‭1 John‬ ‭3‬:14-‭15‬ ‭ESV‬‬. Love is expressed in connecting with one another. We’ve got to be people who are loving one another. Let’s connect with one another intentionally.

    1. Love involves practising hospitality. One of our key values is to express love through offering hospitality. Whether you are married or single you can be hospitable. Let’s be biblical.

    2. Having authentic relationships - to have deep friendships. The Bible has 51 or more one another’s. Practising those is showing love to one another. We are not perfect but we’re making an effort to grow.

  2. Obey the word of God: “"If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭15‬ ‭ESV‬‬. A growing disciple is one who is feeding on the word, meditates on the word and is transformed through obeying the word. This should be happening on a regular basis. “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” ‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭23‬-‭25‬ ‭ESV‬‬. You want to be blessed. Read the word and do what it says. Sometimes culture is very different from what the Bible says. But we need to adjust our life to reflect the word of God.

  3. Servanthood: “Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." He said to them, "You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles Lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."”‭‭Matthew‬ ‭20‬:‭20‬-‭28‬ ‭ESV‬‬. This is the principle of the kingdom. The way to greatness is through serving. If you want to be first, you have to be a slave. Jesus modelled it himself and calls us to follow him in the same way. If you want any form of public ministry, you have to serve and become a servant. Those who wash the feet of the saints have the privilege of leading them. We are talking about sacrificial serving. We are here to serve the body of Christ and be servants. This is a value that is held in high esteem by Jesus and by us. If you want to progress in your spiritual life, serve. We all have a role and a function in Word of Grace. You can’t be part of a body if you don’t have a function. It would not serve any purpose.

  4. Mission: Jesus came to earth and after dying on the cross and resurrecting, he says in John “Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you."”‭‭John‬ ‭20‬:‭21‬ ‭ESV‬‬. Our mission is to proclaim the gospel. “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence, earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭20‬:‭11‬-‭15‬ ‭ESV‬‬. This is the reality of our future without Jesus. The moment you trust Jesus you know your name is written in the book of life. The second death is forever and there is no escape. If anyone here has not put their faith in Jesus, today is the day of salvation. Our mission is to share the gospel with love and gentleness. That is what we are called to do till the end of time.

We have looked at 8 discipleship milestones. As we mature, we can do these at a much deeper level. As a new Christian, you would’ve spent 5 mins with the word. As you mature, you want to spend 30 mins etc. we grow in our depth and capacity of doing them.

Prepare for Jesus return | Colin D

This message was preached by Colin Dcruz at Word of Grace Church on  January 6th 2019. To listen/download the audio please click hereTo listen to the Sunday's worship and prophetic contributions please click here.

PREPARE FOR JESUS

What is 2019? It is 2019 years after Christ’s resurrection. Now, we are awaiting Christ’s return.
Matt 24:3-9 –
Time is not circular. It’s linear and heading to an end. What is in the past is gone. One day, Jesus will return and take those who belong to him to heaven. Those who don’t go to heaven will go to hell. That is the worst thing because there is no turning back. Today, if you fail in something you have hope to pass. But after death, there is no changing anything.
Heb 9:27 – Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgement
In chapter 24 of Matthew, Jesus goes into a discourse on what will happen when he returns.
Birth pains are not the arrival of a baby. So rumours of wars, earthquakes etc. are only signs of what is to come.
1.      What can we look for with for with surety that we are close? Look at verse 14 – The gospel will be preached to every people group. The gospel is not just for Christians but for everybody. Revelations say – from every tribe, tongue, and nation.
2.      Some try to predict the second coming of Jesus
Matt 24:36 – “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
No one knows that day or the hour when the Son is coming. Don’t listen to anyone who tries to predict.
But we know how he will come. If you know a thief will come to your house, you will be alert.
Matt 24:42 – “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
The son of man will come at an hour we do not expect. We need to be ready.
In Matt chapter 5, Jesus gives us 3 parables that talk about his coming and how we should be ready.
This is what his coming will be like. He gives us some clues. Do you think it important? He tells us 4 times.

The parable of the 10 virgins:
10 virgins with lamps were waiting for the bridegroom. 5 of them had extra oil and the other 5 didn’t have. When the bridegroom came 5 were unprepared and had to go to the market. Thus they missed the banquet. The door was shut. The other 5 who were prepared got to go to the banquet.
Jesus is coming back. Are you prepared for His return? Have you put your faith in Jesus?

Acts 4:12 – Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

Salvation is found in no other name. Today is the day for salvation. If you have done it, then you need to get baptized.

The parable of talents:
Then in verse 14, he tells them the parable of the talents. With the virgins, they had to be prepared. Here, a businessman gave his servants 5 talents, 2 talents and 1 talent. He gave to each one of them according to his ability. The expectation was that you put it to work and multiply it. When the master came back, he wanted to settle accounts. Verse 21 says –
The one with 5 made 5 more
The one with 2 made 2 more
The one with 1 did nothing

When Jesus returns, he will demand an account of our talents, opportunities that we were given. If we are faithful, much more will be given. The one talent man was scolded for being wicked and lazy.
Verse 28 says that there is the same punishment for the person who did nothing. Theologians say that this person is not a believer.
At the end of the day, you need to be productive. Thank God for what you have and ask God to help you to do something. Don’t worry. Start small.

What are you doing to be productive?

Sheep and Goats:
Jesus is pressing in his point. He will come back and there will be judgment.
Verse 34 says that there are huge rewards in store. Anything we do and bless someone, we do it unto Jesus.
Verse 44 says when we don’t serve the least; it’s like not serving Jesus.

A follower of Christ will have a desire to do good.  As we begin in 2019, we are one year closer to Jesus’s return. You be prepared, productive and perform.

To advance the Kingdom, we have to share the gospel.
Our tagline is Enjoying God, Making friends, Changing lives.

Enjoying God:
Have a deep relationship with Jesus. Is your relationship deepening? What can I do to deepen it? Take steps to grow. Get YouVersion on your phones.

Part of enjoying God is fellowship. We should have a hunger for God’s presence and to be with his people.

Making friends:
1 John 4:7 – Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God

John talks about loving one another. God’s nature is love and he wants it to be demonstrated here. How do we do it?
Make friends in the church is of high value.
Have lunch on Sunday afternoon with someone from church. Deepen your relationships. It is a rich, new and rewarding experience.
Be a part of a GYM group this year
Be a part of one of the different serving teams. We demonstrate our love by serving one another

Changing lives:
Jesus will only come back when the gospel is preached to all. Will you be a labourer in the Lord’s harvest field? This year, can you tell someone about Jesus? Jesus will touch their hearts. At the IDT, you will learn how to share the gospel.
In this 2019, will you think about how you can grow in these 3 areas?
Your relationship with God
Your friendships in the church
Reaching out to the lost

You will not change just one life but maybe a whole family and generations to come.

Sharing your Faith | Colin D

This message was preached  by Colin D'cruz at Word of Grace Church on March 12th, 2017. To listen/download the audio please click hereTo listen to the Sunday's worship and prophetic contributions please click here

Last week we stopped at Acts 2. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was poured out on men. That day 3000 people get added to their number. In verse 41, we see that the church grew to 3120. They devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, sharing, and prayer.
In Acts 3, we see one incident in the life of the church. So we will see what we can learn from there.” Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.[a] 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms
Haven’t we seen that sight in India? Here peter and John were going to pray. Prayer is important. In verse 4, Peter looked at him. “And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.
1.      Great need- there is a great crisis happening, in country after country. 20 Mil people have been displaced right from Somalia, liBya, Syria... even individually people have great needs. People are suffering from different things. But as we meet people, they have difficult, impossible situations. We need to be like Peter and John, go into situations that have great need, and bring great hope. Let us look out for these needs. If you spend 10 mins talking to people you will discover their needs. The Kingdom has come, but let’s talk to people- let’s spread the kingdom out there. This means 5 words- Can I Pray for you? Most people are open to prayer. Sometimes, we say, we’ll pray for you, and forget about it. But make it a point to pray for them immediately. Let’s do it sensitively but immediately.

2.      Great Miracle- when you pray for people and it gets answered, don’t they come back asking for the next thing? Expect a great miracle when we pray. The man was healed instantly. He went with them into the temple courts. He was walking and jumping and praising God. it was a miracle. He recognised Jesus did that. Peter and John at the back of that miracle started preaching the gospel.

From verse 12- 17, peter said to them, ““Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant[b] Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. 14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus[c] has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.” In verse 19 he says, “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you,”.

So we share the gospel with them at the back of a miracle.  In John 14:12-  “”. He is saying, believe me on the basis of the miraculous works I am doing. Jesus did great things, but he says we will do greater things. For this, we need the power of the Holy Spirit. When He is upon you, you become bold.

3.      Great opposition- The Sadducees seized Peter and John. The enemy does not want people to be saved. So wherever the gospel is preached, there will be opposition. Don’t be surprised by it. Later on, we see that they were flogged. Sharing the gospel is not a safe thing. In Acts 4:26-  “” After being flogged and beaten, they are praying for boldness to proclaim the gospel and for miraculous signs and wonders to follow them. It is something else to go into a hostile world and tell people about Jesus.

4.      Great harvest- the number of men grew to about 5000. There is a great harvest. If you want to see the kingdom come, Peter and John are no more. Now we have all of us.

Prayer is important. We need the Holy Spirit to proclaim the gospel. Then, talk to people. Let’s get off our phones. It can take up all our time. Let’s spend time having real conversations with people. take a step and say, can I pray for you. We are the agents of the Kingdom to take it forward. We need to go out of here thinking, we can do it.

Vision and Values: Word of Grace Church| Colin D

This message was preached  by Colin D'cruz at Word of Grace Church on August 14th, 2016. To listen/download the audio please click hereTo listen to the Sunday's worship and prophetic contributions please click here

We are very blessed. We are well, we have good health, we have food, a variety of clothes to choose from, education and shelter. We are truly blessed.

Today we will go through the vision of Word of Grace Church.

The most famous prayer is the Lord’s Prayer. Matthew 6:9 onwards. The prayer of Jesus was that the kingdom of heaven would come on earth. Not only did he ask his disciples to pray for, he also did these things. As you read the gospels you watch what Jesus did. He travelled and healed the sick, cast out demons, proclaimed that the kingdom has come and called men and women disciples. Then he did what only he could do, he died on the cross and rose from the dead.

Before he went to heaven he gave the great commission, to go into all the world and make disciples of them baptising them and teaching them to obey everything Jesus commanded Matt 28:18- 20.
Jesus is in heaven, but his body is here on earth.

Q. So how are we at Word of Grace doing that?

The other side is the great commandment. We want to make disciples and bring heaven on earth. Our tag line aims to nail those- Enjoying God, Making Friends, changing lives.
1.      Enjoying God.

Matt 22:36- 37 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
Let's look at loving God. This is our priority- to pursue the presence of God. It's not about singing a few songs and moving on. In Exodus 33:14-16 Moses said that if God's presence does not go with us what's the point?

Q. What is it that distinguishes us from others?

It’s the presence of God! We should value this more than anything else.

Throughout scripture people were marked by the presence of God. When God'sPresence is with us, people notice. Will you be one who desires Gods presence? In order for this to happen we need to keep in touch with the precepts/ the word of God. That's why we have the GYM groups, IDT, etc. We seek the power of God. We don't just want to sing songs but do the stuff.

One way we get joy in our life is when prayers get answered. How powerful is a prayer meeting? You can tell by the prayers that get answered.

2.      Making Friends
The second greatest commandment is to love your neighbour as yourself. One of the things we want to foster is good healthy relationships in the church. Your background, age etc does not matter. One way we do this is by eating together. This is something Jesus did. He had the last supper with all his disciples. He cooked breakfast when he rose from the dead.

It shows that we accept them and they accept you. In our nation that is so divided based on caste we want to break those barriers down. In villages, the lower castes are not allowed to draw water from the same wells as the upper caste. We are all one in Christ. In Word of Grace, if you are new, you will almost always receive an invitation to lunch.

I’ve had the privilege of visiting many countries and churches. But this one church we visited in Holland stood out. After the service, someone came and invited us for lunch at their home and it had made such a huge impact, in this foreign country where we hardly spoke the language, to be accepted into their home to eat together and spend time.

Jesus didn't call us servants. John 15:15- “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” He called us friends. Our proof of this is as we demonstrate love to each other. Invite people and make friends. We are all different. But friendships and relationships are important.

The number one problem in the world today is loneliness. You can have 2000 facebook friends, but how many will show up for their funeral. Invest your time and money in making friends.

3.      Changing lives.

If we only did the above two we would be a happy clappy club. We have a mission- To bring heaven on earth. To be changed and to change lives. Being born again is just the first step.

We do the discipleship blueprint:
·        Born again
·        Baptism in water
·        Baptism in the holy spirit
·        Added to the church
·        Serving
·        Giving

I have told you Abdullah's story. But they are many like that. We have a get connected course for new people.

Num10:29- “Now Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”

If you are new here I want to extend the same invitation to you. Come with us and we will do you good. We want to help equip you to be involved in the lives of others.

2 Cor 5:14-For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.” Jesus died for you and now he wants you to live for him. The prophetic word over us is that we will disciple people and then send them to the nations.

So, this is it- our priority is enjoying God, but we don't do it alone, we are making friends. So that together our lives can be changed and the lives of others can be changed.

How to B.L.E.S.S | Alan Preston

This message was preached by Alan Preston at Word of Grace Church on the 15th of Feb 2015. To listen/download the audio please click here.As you read the Bible right through what’s the story being the story? Is it just fanciful stories about Abraham, David, and Paul etc or is there something deeper, fundamental going on?

God’s got a plan. Do we know what the plan is and are we tapped into it?
All scriptures point to Christ. What did Christ come to do? The pinnacle of what God was to offer us a way of salvation yet we are only scratching the surface- the tip of the iceberg. So to say Jesus came to die for our sins it’s only the tip of the ice berg. There is so much more. We need a bigger picture.

When God created man he mad man special. Why was man special and very good? Because he was made in the image of God. He was called to rule and have dominion over every thing created. Why did God ask Adam to name every living creature? Because, he was given authority. When man rebelled he didn’t lose his image of God  but lost his authority.

It got marred, messed up and man invited Satan to rule. This is why it’s called the kingdom of darkness. It was not about one man and woman serving but a change in order. Wasn’t Eve the one who sinned? Then why is it called the sin of Adam? When Satan came in and took over. God always had a plan. This happened in the sovereignty of God’s will. His plan was to restore all things to its original beauty.

So the first step to restore God’s plan was to choose Abraham. Through Abraham all the nations of the world would b blessed
Then Israel failed in its divine purpose in two ways. One, they invited a human king and they worshipped idols and pagan Gods. God was merciful and sent prophet after prophet whom they stoned and rejected.

So God send Jesus. Jesus talks to the Pharisees and Sadducees and says today the kingdom will be taken away from you i.e. the divine purpose for Israel was taken away and embodied in Jesus. Jesus sets in motion a new kingdom. The kingdoms of this world will finish. The Kingdom of God starts with Jesus and is moving on and will continue into eternity. WE live in the overlap period.

So we do our jobs in the kingdom of this world but we belong to another kingdom. We are the people of the future. What it means to repent of your sins is not just repenting for the things done but its saying I have been duped by the Kingdom of this world; I now belong to the kingdom of God which has different values. We are no longer duped by wealth or Bollywood or the powers of this world.

We have seen something better, eternal and that will last. There is a future with Jesus and what’s going on here will not last forever.
When you sin you have been deceived by the Kingdom of this world. Repentance is coming back to Jesus and to the Kingdom of God. That’s why we pray the Lord’s Prayer

So as part of God’s mission it was not to just forgive us but to restore all things to himself. Col 1:20 We are a part of the new things that will emerge and he has gathered a new community called the church. So God’s mission has a church. It’s not church on a mission so we are not isolated in Pune. We will be powerful in bringing the Kingdom of God here on earth. WE restore creation. WE are a part of creation.
Anyone who is a true believer is a missionary-whether you are a teacher, in the call center etc . We are the church gathered on Sunday and the church scattered during the week.
Missionary means more than telling people about Jesus. You‘ll work honestly, pro life,  work for cleanliness etc.

Here is a helpful way of reaching out to your non Christian friends
You B.L.E.S.S them. As a people who are a part of the future how do we bless?

B Begin with prayer. Hearts are changed through prayer not information.
L Listen to people. Ask questions. Feel their pain, identify them, feel their pain
E Eating - have meals with them.
S serve – find ways that you can serve them in a tangible way
S Share your story.

If you do the first 4 you have won the right to be heard on how Christ has made a difference to you. So pray for 5 people, bless everybody, invite 3 to Word of Grace and expect one to turn up.

We will do this because we are on God’s mission.
