BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT Who is the Holy Spirit
Part 1
What a spirit-led meeting read during
the worship! We are promised blessing on our descendants and in Joel we are
told that young men will see visions and old men will dream dreams.
We heard last Sunday from Joel how God is pouring out His spirit.
The fastest-growing church is in Iran through supernatural visitations.
We need to get caught up with what God is doing or we will miss the bus.
The Holy Spirit can be a mysterious force for us to relate to. We can
relate to Father and son. The Holy Spirit is a little different. What exactly
and who is he?
1.
The Holy Spirit is the manifest
presence of God to the world. He reveals himself through the HS. He was at work
not just in the NT but in the OT and right in the beginning.
Gen1: 1-2 And the Spirit of God was
hovering over the waters. We see God the Father, the Word – Jesus and the
Spirit involved in creation.
What did he do – in the OT he came
for a specific time and function and a few people. Not on everyone. In the
power of the Holy Spirit, they did amazing things
Jud 3:10-11 Othniel became Is judge.
One man defeated the enemy because of the Hs work.
Jud 6: 34 Gideon – The Spirit of the
Lord came upon him and he blew the trumpet. With 300 people he defeated a huge army of the Amalekites and Midianites
Gideon was the least clan in the
least in the tribe of Is. Jud 6:14-15.
Jesus is referred to as the lamb of God just once. John 1:29 He is the lamb who has taken away the sins of the world.
This statement is very important-
this is not said once but is said in all the 4 gospels. Luk3:16,
It is also recorded in Acts 1:4-5.
Jesus himself speaks of himself to the waiting apostles after his resurrection
from the dead.
V5 John baptized with water but in a
few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
There are 3 diff ref to bap and
immersion.
1Cor 12:13 – When you immerse someone
there are 3 elements at play – The person getting baptized, the baptizer and
the medium.
1 Cor 12:13 – Baptized into one body-
We are baptized. The Holy Spirit is one who baptizes.
Body – Jesus/church. The Holy Spirit
took you and immersed you into Jesus. This is referring to salvation.
That is why we say In Christ.
Matt 28: 18-20 The baptizer is a
person, the medium is water.
Matt 3:11 – John the Baptist is the
baptizer; water is the medium.
Jesus will baptize you with water and
fire. Jesus is the baptizer and the medium
is the Holy Spirit.
Peter who was brave was hiding in the
upper room.
Matt 26:69- Peter is afraid and
denies Jesus. He was fearful.
But after bap in the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:8 – you will receive power
when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Acts 2:22 – Peter stood up and proclaimed a
brave message. He became very bold.
Acts 3:13- Peter preaching boldly in
the temple courts.
Acts 4:8-10 Peter preaches before the
rulers and chief priests.
What did the Holy Spirit do to
you?
Give you boldness to proclaim
the gospel.
Acts 6:8 They did mighty signs and
wonders.
Acts 8: Philip proclaimed the gospel and he
healed and delivered people.
Ex 31:1-4 - Skill ability, knowledge,
and craft. He gives us supernatural skills for our profession.
Ex 35:34 - The ability to teach
others.
Then we have the gifts of the Holy
Spirit.
Acts 4:31 refers to being filled with
the HS after their bap in the HS.
4:8 – They is a constant infilling
of the Holy Spirit besides the onetime event.
We will look into more of this next
week.
