Family Matters 7 Marriage - tie the knot, cut the cord.

This message was preached by Colin D Cruz at Word of Grace Church Pune, on the 15th of September 2013

This is part 7 of a series called Family Matters. What is marriage? What is the blue print for a good marriage? We are sorry that there is no audio to go with this blog.

Marriage is a very touchy topic - Anything that touches our core values or our culture can be a sensitive issue.

In every culture there are some things that are good. We have such beauty and variety in our India dress, colors, styles of cooking. In general, Indians are warm and hospitable - whether rich or poor. But sometimes, there are things that are not good and there are things that are neutral viz. dress, food.

There are things that are wrong that have been needed to be addressed and removed viz. Sati, dowry, and child marriage. Bad things need to be rejected. Some things need to be redeemed. The Good News of the Bible upholds good things and redeems certain things in our culture.

Marriage is God’s idea and not one cave man who decided to stick with one woman.
Marriage is not just a good thing, it is a God thing.
God gave man a mission to look after the garden. He then gave him a Mrs. and we have the first marriage.

Marriage is also a mystery. The Bible begins with marriage and ends with the marriage supper of the Lamb.

Q. what is God’s blueprint for marriage?

Statistics show that marriage is on the decline and the rate of divorce is going up. In Mumbai there are 250 cases monthly registered for divorce. There are many more broken marriages where the wife will just bear up and suffer.

n Genesis 2:24-25- God lays down the foundation here. This is important because the very foundation is being attacked, marred and disfigured. God wants us to uphold His divine pattern for marriage.

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked and they felt no shame.”

God's blueprint for a successful marriage: Leave your parents, be joined to your wife to become one flesh and be intimately connected in every dimension of life.

This is the divine recipe for success in marraige. The ingredients and the method, both are important, just like in a recipe.

This is God’s blueprint not man’s clever idea. It is repeated again in the New Testament in Matthew 19:4, Mark 10:7 and Ephesians 5:25.

There are four processes involved here:

We are going to talk about the first one today and that is ‘leaving’.
Then we have joining. It means being superglued together so strongly, that separating the two will result in damaging both. Becoming one flesh is a mystery. As a man an woman come together in marriage, it is God who joins them and makes them one flesh. Finally, "named and unashamed" speaks of intimacy. This refers to mental, emotional, physical and spiritual oneness.

Q. What does it mean to leave?

At one stage we were all in our mother’s womb. At that stage we were one with our mother. Then comes a time when the baby is born and the umbilical cord now needs to be cut. The umbilical cord is tied and the cord is then cut.

“Tie the knot and cut the cord”. At marriage we tie the knot and we have to cut the cord. For many years we were connected to our parents but now you are a new unit. The relationship dynamics will now change though we still love each other.

· Physically: not necessarily living in the same house under the same roof. How do we do this? In case of old infirm parents we do look after them but we must establish who is in charge. Often husbands side with their mothers. This causes a lot of conflict. When a husband stands up for his wife, it gives great security to the wife. Sometimes the in-laws try to dominate on other issues as well.

· Financially: when you get married, you should be able to provide for your wife. Men must study hard, work hard and get a good job to be a good provider. When we take care of old parents, we need to treat both the in-laws equally. It is primarily the husband's responsibility to provide for his family.

· Emotionally: Whenever there is a problem, we are not running back to dad and mum. In all this we honor our parents but we are separate. Remember your first priority is not your mother or sister, but your WIFE.

· Spiritually: Now the husband must lead the home spiritually. So men, build yourselves up in the faith. Even how you bring up your children is the responsibility of the parents and not the grandparents. Men must be able to lead their wives spiritually.

When we follow this ( and this is one only part of the ingredient for a successful marriage) there will be harmony all around. You will have a strong marriage and relationships with both the in-laws intact.

Being an apostolic people - Part 2

In August, Regions Beyond which is Steve Oliver's Apostolic Sphere (which is a part of Newfrontiers ) held a Conference in the UK .

At the conference Steve O and others shared on what the the apostolic, what is Regions Beyond and how do we relate as different apostolic spheres that share a common history, vision and values.

This series of blogs is very useful to helping us understand who we are, what vision shapes us and what the future holds for us.

I want to give you some points and I will stress on only two today.

PART 2

1. Eph 2:20 Christ is the corner stone. If we are to build anything He needs to be our Corner Stone. Everything we are doing is for Him and by Him. We can get caught up with many things and then forget that it is He who said “I will build my church”

2. The Word Of God. People who come to church on a Sunday are constantly being told that the Bible is irrelevant and outdated. We need to have well worn and read Bibles and we need to speak form hit. It’s never wrong to tell people to read their Bibles.

3. Prayer- It must be the foundation of your church. The size of your church is the number at your prayer meeting. Paul tells the Colossians to devote themselves to prayer/ Why? When new prayer together, we hear God, faith rises in our hearts. If we are light in prayer we are vulnerable.

4. New Testament Leadership- I want to stress this one. This is my passion. We must see a new breed of leaders born among us. I have never known a time when we need robust leadership and men of courage more. The world is slowly locking people up. To change the world we need robust leaders. How do you do this across the globe? God will give us grace to work across the globe relation ally God told me to “build a people who are there for one another’s success”

Why are we leaders? We are here for the success of others. This is true New Testament leadership. This is Jesus’ model. The most freeing statement is “you will do greater things than me “Jesus is for us.

In Phil 2:1-4 (THE Message) If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”

This is it. We have got to get this into our hearts – a deep spirited love and honouring and truly loving one another. This is it.

How many church movements and churches have a history of broken relationships? This is because in our leadership styles we push ourselves ahead and have a wrong view of success and getting ahead.

To the next generation – all that we are doing is for you.

5. Holy Spirit – “ If the Holy Spirit had to decide to leave the church, 90% would not notice” A. W Tozer

6. Grace- Paul puts this in. We can only do what we are doing because he enables it.

7. Community- it’s always relational

8. Discipling of all believers- we want to make room for the next generation. At the HUB we have the next generation preaching. Fusi will be preaching at the HUB.

1. The church- God has gathered a community. M. L Jones in Ephesians said about the manifold wisdom of God – the church is like prism held up in front of God and a light shines through it and it makes the whole nature of God known to the world. That’s who we are.

Today there is strange language out there that says we’re not going to call church, church because the world does not like it. Are you going to tell Jesus that? If I remember he said that I am going to build my church. Don’t hear me wrong – contextualization is one thing but I am thrilled by church and not embarrassed by it.

We will not dial down on our songs because the world won’t like it or stop speaking in tongues at our meetings.

Can I ask you to have a high view of church? Let’s be careful what we throw out because I am concerned about what we going to be to be left with. Are we going to be like a club that follows Jesus or are we going to be a power filled Christ followers singing in tongues ad proud of Jesus and His glorious church.

Before us lies the landscape of nations opening up or towns and neighborhoods. God has called us to this together. God has promised us this, this morning. We will do it as One New Man. It’s a promise in our hearts. WE got to go out there . There are so many nations to reach.

One thing I don’t find difficult to do in church is to ask people to give. God provides through people who know what we have is his anyway.

We are sending people off at our first Conference. How great is that?. We ask for generosity. We have a great administrative team and what we give gets out there and gets the job done.

Being an Apostolic people Part 1

There is a newness bout us and yet we are already One New Man .

18 years ago god have us a promise or a commission to go to the daisies of Africa and so we sought God. He said I will do something here and it will flow like rivers to the nations of the world.”

At that time was leading a small group and was an Elder in training. Now to see it all unfold…

Because with God’s promises that which seems unreal become possible.

God has such a great work for us. He wants us to take some ground and we will progress from there.

You go to big conferences where the atmosphere is charged and is so different from back home. That’s when you remind yourself of all the promises of God. We need to hold onto them and believe in what God has called us to.

God is looking for an apostolic people group and not just Apostles. This people groups have the ability to give of themselves whole heartedly to their local church and at the same time give themselves to the nations. God wants us to be that people group.

We began by taking a look at Paul’s letter to Philemon. When you read Colossians you see why Paul writes “there is no Greek, no Jew...” Barbarians were the uneducated among them. Scythian – was a person everyone joked about. Every culture has a Scythian who is the butt of all the jokes.

This letter goes out because Paul has come into contact with a young runway slave who has now got born again and in the course of spending time with Paul gets caught up in the Apostolic vision and is now a champion of the gospel. And in the sovereignty of God Onesimus’ owner is Philemon, a co worker of Pauls.

1 Cor 3:10 -10 by the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

As we return to our churches I want us to look at something i.e. building well. If we are to fulfill all that god wants of us it’s going to depend on what we do at home- our marriages, our family, our friends, our home churches. Then we can go to the nations.

Paul is grappling with this with the church that he has never been to and the whole runaway slave issue. What about the other slaves in the church? He can’t go there in person because he is in prison and so he sends a team of two delegates on his behalf carrying two letters.

Paul is laying a foundation. The act of setting the slave boy free will propel the church to greatness.

In 1995 we moved to Clarence in to this big farm house. As I worked on it I found I had a lot of cracks to deal with. When the rains came all the cracks worked upon reappeared and I realized that the house had poor foundations. I realized that I need to correct the foundations of the house will fall on our heads. We began doffing under the foundations and putting in new slabs and now there are no more cracks.

Paul realizes that if this new One Man has to work the foundations have to be right. He had to contend with slave owners and slave issues. This book is an important manual. Every apostolic issue is found in this small book.

Martin Lloyd Jones says you cannot talk about building without checking the foundations first.

Architects will tell you don’t think about building up until we know what is going on underneath.

We need to what are the foundations so that we disciple people as followers of Jesus, embrace the poor, be a generous people and all the other things we have to make sure the foundations are in place or else we reach out to the nations we will find the foundations begin to crumble.

Simon Petit said “we are not just involved in a blessing ministry but a building ministry “Therefore we need to understand God’s architectural plan.

Leaders look at the foundations of your church. Get apostolic gifts to come to your church and assess the foundations. Ask your people what does the church look like?

Ray Lowe was doing an apostolic work for us as he pointed out keys for us – that’s foundations.

When a moment becomes a movement Part 2

Philemon verse 1 Right in the opening address in the letter to Philemon we get an idea of what Church Planting looks like in the nations. To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker— 2 also to Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier—and to the church that meets in your home:

Verse 4 : we see what makes an apostle happy.

Verse 6: You want to grow in God? Share your faith

Martin Luther referred to this book as “This is holy flattery of the finest kind”!

Now, to the crunch. Paul does not appeal on the basis of apostolic authority but love. Philemon’s mind must have been spinning.

Verse 11- Onesimus means “useful”. Paul is playing on this name.

Verse 12- “ I am sending him who is my very heart” Do not miss the extent of the depth of relationships as they sought to reach the nations. There is no shyness in sharing their heart.

Verse 17 This was a huge thing for Philemon. It would mean Onesimus would not sleep in the slave quarters but in the finest of guest rooms of the house.

Verse18: “Charge it to me”

Verse 23 Ephapharas planted the church in Colossae and Laodicea. The gospel is going across the nations. He is at the cutting edge going to the nations, establishing churches and appointing Elders, engaging cultures and new situations.

In the Roman world 60% were in slavery. So the church was full of people who were in slavery.

Now Onesimus is coming face to face with the issue- a wealthy slave owner and a runaway slave.

One new man in Christ- how do I bring these two together? Philemon is a true hero. He knows what the law demands and the possible actions. But he responds to Paul’s wish.

Fifty years later in 110 A.D Ignatius a church father was arrested by the Romans. He was the Bishop of Antioch. He was taken to another city to be martyred. One their travel they stopped at Ephesus and the church served Ignatius. He was there for quite some time. He wrote a letter thanking them for their hospitality and he wrote to the bishop or Overseers of Ephesus. Can you guess who it was? It was Bishop Onesimus. It can’t be proved but many scholars feel it is the same Onesimus.

God loves to take the nothings and confound the world.

Philemon understand Apostolic partnership and that it will be costly to him, it will impact his reputation in Colossae and more so when they hear what he did for his fugitive slave. But he was sold out for the purposes of God. The young slave grows up. This letter became famous in the early church.

Bishop Ephesus is also responsible for compiling the 10 letters of Paul. We don’t know how he did this but we owe much to him. God does amazing things through the gospels.

The nations are waiting for us to hear the good news but it means partnering that goes beyond a constitution or organization but a partnering of hearts.

The world is waiting for us; we have many Onesimus' to unlock in the nations.

Two things I want to leave with you

1. None of the story about Philemon or Onesimus would have happened if it were not for Apostolic thrust to the nations. Jesus told them to go to their cities. Samaria and then to the ends of the earth.

Young men born out of Paul’s ministry get caught up in apostolic ministry. Eph 4:11 Christ gave us the gifts God has a plan for each one of us. We need good strong healthy churches and we need those who will go.

2. We need to note how to relate to a Sovereign God who works things our in our lives. You may be running away from something. What does God want for you? We need the businessmen who will partner with us as we go to the nations. God will not ask us to do something and not provide. We only need to bring our 5 loaves and two fish to God.

Paul’s letters are always about people and often we have turned it into static doctrine if I can call it that. Everyone is described with affection. We are here. We have people who have gone before us. We have the young ones as well.

We could buy a killing filed in Burundi for 100,000 pounds to start a training center and church. We got money to work into India.

These are significant days. We need to rally our churches and see the purposes of God and join together in true relationships even though we are spread out.

Apostolic partnership is here and so we go! God is calling us and whatever it is, whether it is to be faithful in prayer , lets respond to God and take the opportunity , whether it is local, global or somewhere in the middle.

Session 1 - One New Man - Philemon By Steve Oliver ( Part 1)

In every gathering of people from the nations there are some significant moments for what is to come There are countless who are dependent and waiting for the outcome of this gathering- they are waiting for the church to rise up and do what God has called them to do.

When Alexander was sweeping across with his armies toward the east he reached the foothills of the Himalayas until one day his commander came to him and said that they had a problem “We’ve reached the edge of our map. There is no more to be done” Alexander’s reply “No, it time to go and draw some new maps”

It is time for us to press into new areas, and draw new maps. Moses said its time to break camp and advance. At a Conference in S Africa many, many, years ago we were encouraged to stop thinking local but global. It was a moment in time for us then. Since 1992 3000 churches have been planted in the nations as a result of that moment in God.

Their moment became a movement. We are at such a time. We have gathered for a great task in God. We have been given the task of taking the prophetic given to Newfrontiers( the wider church family that we belong to) We have been given the charge to model and pass on the values we have fought hard for and to change the expression of Christianity across the world. We’ve been asked to maintain the relationships.

There is one thing that we have NOT been asked to do and that is to camp and hold ground, rather we have been asked to multiply and take new ground.

Tonight God has gathered us from different nations for a great task and commission to what god has called us to. The question is are we ready? Our calendars are already filling up with dates to go to new countries. New Frontiers has become a group of apostolic leaders together with their teams and churches united in mission and in core values.

We have gone through a change and its easy in a time of transition to loose our way or step back and say “we’ve done our bit”. We can cease being a movement and become a monument. We have been given apostolic authority to press on to do what God has called us to.

History has not given us a model like this where an apostolic movement multiplies itself and takes nations. This movement can change things for nations. We are here for a great task. In these days lets catch the heart of God.

Our calling ourselves Regions Beyond- we feel God gave us this name and it’s a big and scary one.Today we have churches all over the place and new nations are opening up in the Middle East, African nations, Far East, Asia. This is what God is entrusting to us. We have Churches that meet in Five Start hotels and at river banks, in schools and refugee camps, at mountain sides and in villages and even under a tree! God is drawing us together and knitting our hearts. This is the start of something great.

What is Regions Beyond? It is a diverse family of Churches joined together in apostolic partnership.

We are so diverse but joined together by this wonderful call of God. Some will be entrusted to pass onto the next generation in your local church; some may go to the nations. More and more the world is in need for the church to rise up. There is a lot resting upon us.

We pick up from the fore fathers and are thankful that they have gone before us, like Ray Lowe here, Terry and others.

What does the future look like? How does apostolic partnership greatly diverse work as we reach the nations? What lies ahead? How will we train? These are not new problems. You only have to read your Bible to see how it works.

Paul is grappling with Church Planting in the nations and is facing new situations. Paul was under house arrest in Rome when he writes this letter i. e Philemon. I want to use this book to show you how the apostolic works.

A.D 60 the gospel has already spread right across the Roman world. As it spreads there are new situations, and cultures that Paul and team have to engage with.

Philemon – there was a young man Onesimus and Tychicus who were born in Colossae and is a leader of a small team. As they made their way back to Rome right across to Colossae, (Modern Turkey) it s a 1700 km journey. They are carrying two letters. One was for Philemon and the other was the church in Colossae. Philemon was a business man who was a slave owner .This journey must have taken many days.

Tychius was going back home but is different for Onesimus because there is a matter of the past that he has to face because he is a runaway slave. Onesimus used to be a slave in the house of Philemon. It was a huge decision. It could mean crucifixion or at least being severely beaten and then branded on the forehead as a fugitive.

So he had this burden and now he is in Rome. No sooner is he there that unusual circumstances begin to take place. Onesimus meets Paul and his life is transformed. Paul introduces him to the Saviour Jesus and very soon this runaway slave is a born again believer.

There is a team gathering around Paul viz. Timothy,Epaphras, Demas etc and suddenly Onesimus is a part to this team and is waiting on them and serving them. Ps 113 God when he says he raises the poor from the ash heap and seats them with princes. This slave is sitting at the table as a brother now. But at the back of his mind was the thought that he would have to face his future at some stage. If he didn't I am sure Paul had already brought it up.

As God would direct things, the owner of Onesimus is another partner of Paul’s i.e. Philemon. It must have been during Paul’s time in Ephesus that Paul meets a wealthy man who gets saved and gets caught up in apostolic mission and later returns to Colossae and to his estate.

Paul and Philemon become great friends and this comes through in the letter. The day now comes when Onesimus has to go back. It could not go on forever. But in order to make it work Paul decides to stand in the gap and write this letter on behalf of a young slave boy who has now become like a son to him because he was born out of his ministry.

Paul knows there is so much at stake here. It will have wider implications for Philemon, his household, the church that meets there and the whole town. Paul drafts a letter to the Colosssians where he lays the foundations for this. Finally the two men arrive with the letters, one to the church and one to Philemon.

Imagine the situation when Onesimus returns . Did he go to the slave’s quarters? What was the reaction of the other slaves on seeing this runaway return? Tychius goes to meet Philemon and gives him the tow letters. The bible is so relational. It’s not just about doctrine. There is so much friendship and brotherly love and we must never loose that.

A dangerous Obsession

This message was preached by Pete Harwood at Word of Grace Church Pune, on the 1st of September 2013.

Be careful what you crave for- it can ruin your life.Your whole life can be dominated by what you don’t have and this is a recipe for misery.

Accenture did a study and found that 72% of Indian men are dissatisfied with their jobs. This is the second highest score in the world. The number 1 reason was salary. However, it’s not only jobs. 33% are dissatisfied with their love lives. For you maybe it’s your home, your family, the in-laws, etc. There is always something that we are unhappy about and want to change.

Dissatisfaction can ruin our lives. In the Old Testament the Israelites were always dissatisfied in something. Numbers 11:4 (3000 years ago) says- “the rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, ‘If only we had meat to eat!’”Here “rabble” in Greek means “mixed” so maybe some foreigners joined the Israelites. They had a strong craving and it affected the people of Israel. In verse 1-3 Israel complains about their misfortune and God sent fire to consume them. They cry out to Moses for it to stop. You would have thought that they have learned their lesson.

In Verse 4, they start grumbling again about eating meat. Living in the desert is challenging- hot at day and cold at night. God was sending them manna. After sometime, they were contemptuous of it and wanted something else. We may think surely, they had a right to complain. They wondered, where was the land filled with milk and honey? They wondered why they had left Egypt.

All they can think about it food. They forgot that they were slaves in Egypt under such cruel circumstances that all their baby boys were murdered. This is what happens when you get dissatisfied- you crave for something you can’t have and get dissatisfied and lose perspective.

The more you want money, the more you notice it, the more you crave for it, it’s all that you can see and it dominates your thinking. It becomes your obsession and you don’t notice the other good things happening.

The Israelites- all they could see was the problem with their food. They had this beautiful planet to live on, pleasure in family and special blessing from God. God did so many wondrous things for them. God had appeared to them in fire and cloud and even heard the audible voice of God. God made a covenant for them. He provided miraculously. God had blessed them amazingly and yet their minds were fixated on food. It was a terrible rejection of God.

In verse 18, it talks about how God responded. God gave them what they craved for but it led to their destruction. Be careful what you crave for.

1 Corinthians 10:11 says, “These things happened to them as examples and were written down a warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.” We should not make the same mistakes. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we have received amazing blessings from God. The creation God has made is amazing- full of life, color and vibrancy. Just watch the rising and the setting sun and the amazing array of colors.

In food, there is so much variety that is so tasteful! What about family?

Many of us have been specially blessed. We were slaves to sin and God took us out of it enabling us to enjoy a good relationship with God and we have the Holy Spirit. We have wonderful promises as well. And we will enjoy an eternity of bliss with God.

However, inspite of all of this it is possible for us to grow dissatisfied often, over the smallest things- the traffic, potholes, hot, cold- Grumble! Grumble! Grumble!

Sometimes we face genuine difficulties. Someone gets seriously ill, we lose our job, someone steals our bike, etc. We can get fed up or discouraged. We lose perspective and think everything is going wrong.

Our problem is that we are focusing on the negative and forgetting everything else. We can grumble and complain or give thanks for what we have. Many people say that they want to be happy but can’t because they are focusing on the little things that go wrong.

What about marriage? When you have been married for some time you notice that your husband or wife is not that perfect. You then tend to not look at all the good qualities.

What about your job? Maybe your boss is grumpy and lazy and you don’t get paid enough. At least you have a job. Things could be worse. Sometimes it’s your house- we are never satisfied. Advertising is designed to make you dissatisfied. Your whole life can be dominated by what you don’t have and this is a recipe for misery.

Wherever you are, thank God for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. What can we do to guard against them?

“Count your blessings, name them one by one;

Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
